Karl wore this 'processed corn walking' outfit to a panel with author Michael Pollan
Karl J. Mogel just moved to Madison, Wisconsin from Davis, California, to study Plant Breeding & Plant Genetics in a Ph.D. Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In Davis, he was known for being a skeptic, science popularizer (print and radio), and hobbyist beekeeper. Karl was also a prolific editor of the
Davis Wiki, and saw what it could do for diverse communities. (see his
Davis Wiki page) When he arrived in Madison in June 2007, he founded the Madison Wiki to help him get familiar with the region, help Madisonites effectively utilize the power of the Wiki, and one-up the Davis Wiki by becoming far more extensive than its progenitor! Muh hah hah hahhh!
In addition to the Madison Wiki, Karl has started another wiki project of a different kind, a science wiki project called the
DNA Wiki. This is a more long-term effort than the Madison Wiki, but the intent is to create an easily accessible yet informationally-rich public resource for understanding genetics and biotechnology, and organizing everything from tiny details to debunking cultural mythology about various aspects of genetics. When the Madison Wiki takes off, he will devote more time to this wiki project.

2007-08-09 23:31:33 hmm... I just moved to madison from davis too, perhaps it's catching? —MistressAlthaea

2007-10-16 10:06:58 Another Davis transplant here - although I've been here a for year. I remember your name from the Davis wiki...thanks for starting it up in Madison! —chelsadilla
2007-11-06 01:55:01 Minor style change — the bottom border of the active tab wasn't set to the right color:
madison-style.css —PhilipNeustrom (P.S. I added a screenshot to the
wiki directory entry, despite the fact the theme here probably isn't finalized..feel free to replace it when you finalize the theme [color coordination/consistency looks like it's not quite there yet]).

2008-01-06 14:37:49 Karl, I only really know you from the DavisWiki, but I got sidetracked and found my way here (albeit by DavisWiki). Cool that you should have made your way to Madison. UW among my top two choices for pursuing a Ph.D. in French Linguistics. Let's hope I get in! —AndrewLeonard
2008-02-14 21:31:45 I liked your title "Inoculated Mind" until stumbling on your Web "about" page and discovering that I'd misunderstood your intent and discovered that you seem to be unaware that people might understand it as I have. You might check the American Heritage Dictionary, which is great on usage, but I'd say far and away the primary use and connotation of "inoculate" is to protect against infection, and the connotation of colonize/fertilize is so incidental that most people don't distinguish inoculate from vaccinate, but then neither do the medicos. Anyway, I assumed you were advertising facts to protect us against prevailing falsehoods...and I liked that better.

2008-02-15 11:31:57 I'm in the process of updating some of the pages on my website, like the about page and such, since I started podcasting again. Thanks for pointing out that I didn't use the other definition, actually that is half the reason why I like it so much! Indeed, I take the idea-as-infectious metaphor to also mean that "inoculating" minds can mean protecting against "infection" by "pathogenic thoughts." For example, pseudoscience. —KarlMogel
2008-02-15 11:52:33 There, I just updated it. I wrote a great description of my show in an application for a radio station, I'll upload it in some form, perhaps in a page "about" the mindcast. Thanks for pointing this out to me! —KarlMogel
2008-02-15 16:03:12 Sure thing. I'm glad I could be helpful. —168.150.253.56
2008-02-15 16:22:50 You might put a shout out to the meme concept, BTW, if you're going whole hog. —168.150.253.56
2008-02-16 13:06:17 Hey, if you have any questions regarding the radio business, I hosted a commercial radio show for a few years. Media in general is nowhere near as professional or impressive behind the scenes, but I'd like to see your show on the air. —JabberWokky
2008-03-13 22:51:02 Thanks for the welcome! I like how you started in Davis and moved to Madison starting their wiki. I lived in Green Bay and now reside in Davis. I like how you've customized this one. —BrandonBarrette
